If you're envious of the lush locks of the stars or simply want to add some va-voom to your 'do, you don't have to spend lots of time or money on special hair treatments to get longer, more lustrous hair. Contrary to some claims, there's no quick fix to grow longer, fuller hair. By incorporating healthy lifestyle choices into your life as well as taking certain hair care precautions, you can encourage your hair to grow longer and healthier, giving you lush locks.

Step 1

Wash and condition your hair with products formulated for your hair type, including a deep-conditioning treatment once every seven to 10 days. Ask your stylist for recommendations, or test different products for your hair type from your local beauty supply store. Choose a shampoo with SPF to protect your hair from the sun's drying rays.

Step 2

Trim your hair every eight to 10 weeks, recommends Hairstyle.com. This practice banishes split ends and gives your hair an all-over healthier, shinier appearance, as damaged hair tends to occur most frequently at the ends of hair strands.

Step 3

Avoid heat styling, because it dries hair and causes breakage. If you blow dry your hair, set your dryer on cool instead of hot. Avoid flat irons and curling irons whenever possible, because they can cause frazzled, brittle hair.

Step 4

Eat a nutritious diet. To give your hair follicles the nutrients they need to promote hair growth, Ladies' Home Journal recommends incorporating protein and essential fatty acids into your diet. Protein-rich foods include beans, meats, dairy products, eggs, nuts and tofu, and omega-3 fatty acids are found in salmon, herring, tuna and flax seed. Also drink at least eight glasses of water a day, because water helps flush toxins from your body, including the hair follicles.

Step 5

Do not style your hair when it's wet, as it is more likely to cause damage. Wet hair is fragile and breaks easily. If you need to run something through your hair when it's wet, use a wide-toothed comb, which is gentler than a brush.

Step 6

Sleep for at least eight hours a night. Sleep gives your body time to repair and grow, which translates into more time for hair to lengthen. Although hair cells die when they sprout from the scalp, new hair growth that has not yet emerged from the follicle is alive and constantly nourishing and repairing itself. Help the process run smoothly by getting adequate sleep and staying healthy.

Things You'll Need

  • Conditioner for your hair type
  • Shampoo with SPF
  • Deep-conditioning treatment
  • Wide-toothed comb
