What To Look For

SCUBA equipment is a diver's connection to the underwater world. Equipment needs vary based on location, experience and several other factors. The basic necessities are: a mask and snorkel, fins, regulator and buoyancy control device, dive computer and wetsuit. When you shop for SCUBA gear, the most important factors to consider are comfort and fit. A diver should also consider the environment in which she will be diving.

Common Pitfalls

Do not buy gear that is not suited for your diving needs. For example, someone who plans to dive only once or twice a year may consider purchasing a quality mask and renting the other gear. Be sure to take into account the location of your dives. If you plan to undertake cold water dives, a tropical wet suit will not be a wise purchase.

Where To Buy

A PADI shop, dive resort or SCUBA dive shop will be able to provide all of your equipment. Check many different shops if possible, and speak to as many dive pros in the shop as you can. A large shop with multiple options is your best bet, as it will allow you to try many different pieces of gear before you make a decision.

Cost

The cost of SCUBA gear varies greatly. Many divers will attest to the fact that your mask is your most important piece of gear, and is not the place where you should try to save money. Saving a few dollars will not do you any good if you get underwater and discover you cannot see. With all gear, try to weigh the cost versus the quality. Comfort comes first, so keep mind that choosing gear based on cost instead of comfort can lead to a less than pleasant underwater experience.

Comparison Shopping

The best advice when choosing gear is to try out as many different types as possible. Talk to several pros to get their advice on different equipment. When you find something you like, visit several different shops to find the best price. If you find the piece of equipment you know you want, try looking on-line for dive shops with better prices that may deliver equipment to you.

Accessories

Aside from the essential gear, there are many SCUBA accessories that can add to your underwater enjoyment. A slate allows for underwater communication. A dive camera lets you capture your underwater experience. A dive knife is considered essential by many divers. A dive light is needed for night dives. A catch bag allows a diver to easily carry all of his gear. A waterproof accessory box keeps all of your extras neat and organized.

Insider Tips

Check into the dive shop's return policy. It will be much easier to decide on a purchase if you are able to return the item after a dive if it didn't suit you. Be sure to look at the warranty information on all equipment.
