Soccer training camps held during the summer provide a way for competitive young athletes to keep fit and interested in the sport while bettering their game. The training camps typically focus on improving such aspects of the game as finishing, positional play, reading the field, defending and combination play. Scrimmages are typically played each evening. In Arizona, the majority of soccer training camps take place near major cities in June and early July.
Basic Camps
Basic soccer training camps serve players from the ages of 7 to 13 usually in their first three years of playing. They are taught correct techniques and drills to be used the rest of their playing career. These types of programs can be residential or commuter and are offered throughout the state in Tempe, Phoenix and Flagstaff.
Advanced Camps
Advanced soccer training camps serve athletes from 9 years old to high school students. The training focuses on increasing the player's tactical skills and developing his game on the field. There is some variance in focus and specialty throughout these programs. For instance, Arizona State University offers two residential advanced camps in June split between middle and high school players and also has a team program.
Striker Camp
Striker training camps are designed to specifically train the strikers in multiple finishing techniques such as off the dribble, volleys, heading and one-timers. They focus on drills and game-time application. Some camps offer week-long camps while others offer two-day striker intensives that run alongside regular camp.
Goalkeeper Camp
Goalkeeper training camps train goalkeepers in shot-stopping, handling, footwork, crosses and diving. Like strikers, they train in technique and competitive game situations. This type of program is often offered as in-program specialization within a regular camp, which the camper must select at registration.
Camp Type
Deciding on whether to choose a residential camp, day camp or half-day camp is a question of age, money and convenience. Monetarily, day camps and half-day camps in Arizona are always cheaper than residential options. A half-day camp may suit the new camper's level of comfort better if the coordination of drop-off and pick-up is convenient. For an experienced, older camper, a residential camp may be best, as it offers the camper a greater physical challenge and more peer immersion.
