If you are planning to get pregnant soon, you may have decided already whether you want to have a boy or a girl. If you prefer one gender, you may wonder if there are things you can do in order to conceive the sex of your choice. According to Heidi Murkoff and Sharon Mazel, authors of "What to Expect Before You're Expecting," there are several theories that may help you plan for the sex of your baby.

Step 1

Time intercourse according to your ovulation schedule. Have sexual intercourse as close to your ovulation day as possible to increase your odds of conceiving a baby boy, recommend Landrum B. Shettles and David M. Rorvik, authors of "How to Choose the Sex of Your Baby: The Method Best Supported by Scientific Evidence." Have sexual intercourse two or three days before you ovulate to increase your chances of conceiving a baby girl.

Step 2

Choose the right position to boost your chances of conceiving the gender of your choice. Have intercourse in the missionary position, or man on top, to increase the likelihood that you will conceive a girl, recommends Shettles and Rorvik. Use positions that allow for deeper penetration, such as rear entry or woman on top, to up your odds of having a boy. You increase your chances of a boy by depositing the sperm as deeply inside as possible because the weaker male sperm may reach the egg before the stronger female sperm.

Step 3

Time your orgasm or refrain entirely. Allow female orgasm to occur after ejaculation to help propel the sperm into the fallopian tubes and increase your chances of conceiving a boy. Refrain from female orgasm to boost your chances of conceiving a girl, say Shettles and Rorvik. Male sperm are weaker swimmers and orgasm will result in uterine contractions that get the male sperm closer to the egg. Avoiding female orgasm will help the stronger female sperm to reach the egg first.

Step 4

Eat the right foods. Increase your intake of foods high in calcium and magnesium to increase your odds of conceiving a girl. Add milk, cheese and nuts to get more of these nutrients, recommend Murkoff and Mazel. Add sodium and potassium to up your odds of conceiving a boy. Shake a little salt on your meals or eat potassium rich produce, such as bananas, potatoes and avocados, to increase these elements in your diet.
