Amiodarone is a medication in a class of drugs known as anti-arrhythmics. According to Drugs.com, amiodarone is used to help keep the heart beating normally in people with life-threatening heart rhythm disorders of the ventricles and to treat ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should not take amiodarone, as it may cause birth defects. There are some side effects associated with amiodarone.
Fatigue and Dizziness
Patients taking amiodarone may develop fatigue and dizziness. Users should take caution while driving, operating machinery or participating in activities that require them to be awake and alert. These side effects may diminish over time as the body adjusts to this medication. Dizziness that worsens or leads to feeling like one may faint may be a serious side effect of amiodarone and a doctor should be consulted immediately, reports Drugs.com.
Gastrointestinal Discomfort
Amiodarone may cause gastrointestinal discomfort in some users. Symptoms can include loss of appetite, constipation, nausea, vomiting and stomach pain. Amiodarone can be taken with food to limit these effects. If gastrointestinal discomfort begins to diminish appetite, a liquid nutritional shake may be utilized to ensure an adequate intake of daily nutrients. Avoiding spicy or fatty foods may help lessen stomach pain and discomfort. Patients who experience severe or persistent nausea and vomiting should consult a physician as they may be at risk for dehydration, which can cause additional complications.
Dry Eyes
Patients taking amiodarone may experience dry eyes. A saline eye wash may be recommended for the occasional treatment of dry eyes. According to PubMed Health, patients should maintain compliance with regular eye exams during treatment and call their doctor if their eyes become sensitive to light or if they see halos, or have blurred vision or any other problems with vision since amiodarone may lead to vision problems and permanent blindness in some users.
Insomnia
Insomnia may occur in those taking amiodarone. Insomnia is a difficulty falling or remaining asleep during the night. Insomnia that becomes bothersome should be brought to the attention of a physician, who may be able to recommend some type of natural remedy or prescription drug to treat insomnia.
