The dermis is the lower inner layer of the skin, according to MedicineNet.com. Containing blood vessels, lymph vessels, hair follicles and sweat glands, the dermis helps to regulate body temperature and sebum production. However, thinning of the dermis does occur in some cases. Luckily, there are some natural remedies that can help to thicken this area of skin, according to Julia Lawless, author of "The Encyclopedia of Essential Oils."

Step 1

Combine ½ tsp. carrot seed essential oil, ½ tsp. Elemi essential oil, ½ tsp. Linaloe essential oil, ½ tsp. peppermint, 1/4 tsp. spearmint essential oil, ¼ tsp. rosemary essential oil, ¼ tsp. Peru balsam essential oil and 1 cup coconut oil in a small bottle with a tight-fitting top.

Step 2

Cover the bottle and shake it to combine the essential oils and the coconut oil.

Step 3

Pour a small amount of the mixture onto your clean hands. Gently massage the oil onto your skin for two to three minutes. Leave the oil on your skin for 20 minutes after massaging it in.

Step 4

Rinse your skin with lukewarm water and wash with a gentle cleanser. Pat your skin dry with a clean cotton towel and apply your regular moisturizer.

Step 5

Use this treatment two times per day in the morning and evening. Stop using the essential oil mixture if it causes irritation, redness, swelling or dry skin.

Step 6

Store unused portions of the essential oil mixture in a cool, dry place or in the refrigerator for 90 days. Discard the essential oil mixture after 90 days.

Tips and Warnings

  • Dab a small portion of the mixture in the crook of your elbow or behind your knee to test for an allergic reaction before applying the mixture to a larger, more visible area.
  • This treatment has not been tested or approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. If you are concerned about your safety, contact a qualified doctor or dermatologist.
