Cleansing diets are popular as a way to detox the body of toxins while also helping jump-start a weight loss program. The diets typically involve eating only a small amount of food or completely fasting for a set period of time. Since cleansing diets are usually very low in calories, they should not be undertaken without the advice of a qualified medical professional.
The Clean Diet
This plan was developed by Dr. Alejandro Junger, a New York cardiologist. It is to be followed for 21 days as a way to remove toxins and restore the body's natural healing abilities. The basis of the diet is a liquid meal for breakfast, solid meal for lunch and liquid meal for dinner, according to EveryDiet.org. All foods should be fresh and organic. Avoid processed meals. Recommended foods include fruit smoothies, nuts, salads, fish, soups, beans and fruit medleys. In addition to dieting, participants are instructed to take supplements, spend at least 15 minutes outdoors, meditate and walking as much as possible.
Martha's Vineyard Diet
This plan was created by Dr. Roni DeLuz. DeLuz, the head of a holistic retreat located in Martha's Vineyard. This diet is recommended at least once a year to cleanse the body of toxins. The diet further claims you can lose as much as 21 pounds in 21 days. You are on a juice fast for the entire duration of the diet. The juices and soups allowed are made from a blend of fruits and vegetables, such as spinach, celery, collard greens, kale, cabbage, berries, lemon and ginger.
Master Cleanse
The Master Cleanse, also known as the Master Cleanser or Lemonade Diet, was featured in a book by the late Stanley Burroughs. No solid food is allowed on this detox plan. You are instructed to drink plenty of water along with a special lemonade drink created from a blend of fresh lemon juice, water, maple syrup and cayenne pepper. During the diet, you also perform a salt water flush to encourage bowel movements. You follow the fast for approximately 10 days.
