Pentrexyl is a brand of ampicillin available in some countries like Norway and Mexico but not available in the United States. It is an antibiotic within the aminopenicillin group that breaks down bacterial cell walls in order to fight the growth of bacterial infections. Ampicillin can have other side effects besides producing allergic reactions for anyone with a penicillin allergy.

Secondary Infection

Using Pentrexyl may cause a secondary infection. If a patient doesn't take the full course of ampicillin or if it is used repeatedly or for too long, it may become less effective and cause a secondary infection. Drugs.com says that discontinuing the drug before the infection is cleared up may also cause the bacteria to be less affected by ampicillin so that future infections are much harder to cure.

Diarrhea

Diarrhea or vomiting may occur as side effects when taking Pentrexyl. Some mild diarrhea is fairly common when taking any antibiotic, but it can become severe as pseudomembranous colitis; RxList.com states the patient could become dehydrated enough for the condition to be fatal. Indications of possibly severe diarrhea during or within several months of using Pentrexyl include stomach cramps and bloody stool as well as diarrhea.

Mouth Irritation

Taking Pentrexyl may irritate the mouth as a side effect. Drugs.com states that patients may find their tongues become inflamed or that either their mouths or throats become irritated when using the drug. If redness, irritation or inflammation of the mouth, tongue or throat become evident when taking the medication, the user should contact her doctor immediately for possible discontinuation.
