Onychomycosis is a fungal infection that can affect the nails of the fingers and toes. A nail fungus is commonly caused by the dermatophyte fungi, and can cause unsightly nails. According to MayoClinic.com, signs of a nail fungus include graying or discoloration, yellow to black spots, and thick, brittle and uneven nails. A nail fungus can be difficult to treat, and may spread to other nails. Vinegar is a common home remedy to help treat this fungal infection and prevent it from spreading, and there are three ways you can apply this remedy.
Step 1
Use a dropper to apply 2 to 3 drops of vinegar to the infected nail so that the affected area is completely covered. Let dry and repeat twice a day for as long as needed.
Step 2
Swab vinegar onto the fungus-infected nail with a cotton swab. Apply vinegar to the cotton swab and swab over the affected nail. Make sure the cotton swab is soaked with enough vinegar to cover the nail properly. Let dry and repeat twice a day for as long as needed.
Step 3
Soak the affected nail in a diluted vinegar solution. Pour lukewarm water into a bucket that is large enough to submerse the foot. Then use the dropper or cap of the vinegar bottle to add up to 15 drops of vinegar. Soak the affected foot for up to 30 minutes at a time before drying off with a towel.
Tips and Warnings
- Vinegar can also be used to prevent nail fungus infections. Soak the uninfected foot or hand in vinegar water or apply vinegar directly to cleanse the nails and help reduce the risk of infection.
- A nail fungus infection can be resistant to treatment, and may take many months to heal. Continue the treatment until the nail clears up, or seek alternate treatment methods.
