According to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, each year thousands of teenagers in the United States commit suicide. The vast emotional changes that occur during adolescence can often create intense feelings of worry, self-doubt and uncertainty about the future. For some teens who experience this type of stress or depression, suicidal thoughts may develop, especially if the stress and depression are not treated with professional support.
Risk Factors
Sources at KidsHealth note that teens who suffer from psychological disorders such as depression or anxiety are at higher risk to develop suicidal thoughts. Adolescents who have experienced physical or sexual abuse are also at higher risk. Teens who are questioning their sexuality or who already identify as bisexual, transgender or gay have high rates of depression and suicidal thoughts. In addition, any adolescent experiencing extreme sadness or grief from a death, divorce or loss of an important relationship may be susceptible to suicidal ideation.
Warning Signs
The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry notes that parents and other adults should be aware of potential warning signs for teens who have suicidal thoughts or risk of suicide. Warning signs include changes in personality, withdrawal from friends and family, and discussion of death or self-harm. A teen may also express feelings of hopelessness, despair and show signs of deep depression, such as loss of appetite, fatigue and lack of personal hygiene.
Prevention
The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry notes that suicidal thoughts are often directly linked to psychological disorders. Parents and other adults who have concerns about a teen's suicidal thoughts or potential risk for suicide should seek medical attention and psychological evaluation. Suicidal thoughts can often be successfully treated through psychotherapy and medication. It's also critical that parents and adults who are close to the young person encourage open communication. Allowing a teen to express how he feels and work through difficult emotions is an important aspect of suicide prevention.
