Depression is a medical condition characterized by pervasive feelings of sadness, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Depression may also cause a variety of other symptoms, including inability to sleep, fatigue, weight loss or gain and lack of mental focus. Depression is typically treated with therapy and prescription medications. However, dietary supplements are available that may relieve the symptoms of this condition.

Dietary supplements should not replace medical treatment for depression. Check with your physician before treating depression with dietary supplements.

Evening Primrose

Evening primrose supplements may be effective for treating fatigue, lack of mental clarity and other symptoms of depression, according to Dr. James F. Balch, author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing." These supplements contain gamma-linolenic acids, which are essential fatty acids that may improve the transmission of nerve impulses to the brain. Gamma-linolenic acid may also support healthy brain function, allowing the brain to manufacture natural mood-elevating chemicals. Although this supplement has no known side effects, consult your doctor before treating depression with evening primrose.

St. John's Wort

St. John's wort has been used in herbal medicine for over 2,000 years to boost the immune system and speed the healing of wounds, according to Michael Castleman, author of "The Healing Herbs." Ancient Greeks and Romans also used the herb to ward off evil spirits. St. John's wort contains a chemical called hypericin, which may improve sleep and reduce fatigue and feelings of sadness by inhibiting monoamine oxidase in the bloodstream. Talk to your physician if you plan to use St. John's wort to treat depression--this herb may elevate blood pressure.

B-Complex Vitamins

B-complex vitamins contain up to eight different B vitamins that are considered essential for physical and mental function. According to Dr. Balch, B vitamins help the body maintain proper red blood cell levels, and shield the nerves against damage from toxins and free radicals. B complex vitamins are considered potent anti-stress supplements. They may also improve blood circulation to the bra which may help relieve symptoms of depression. Check with your doctor before taking B complex vitamin supplements. In rare cases, B vitamins may cause liver damage.
