Weight loss improves your health and your self-esteem, but you may find yourself losing motivation at points in your weight loss program. Major lifestyle changes related to diet and exercise take commitment to lose weight initially, continue losing weight and maintain that weight loss long term. Refocusing your efforts may help you overcome a weight loss plateau or loss of motivation. Weight loss is different for each person, but many of the same techniques work for people trying to lose weight.

Step 1

Look back at your weight loss so far as a motivator to continue with your efforts. Look at pictures or old clothing items from your starting weight to show how far you have come. Evaluate where you are in your overall weight loss goals.

Step 2

Write down specific, measurable goals for your continued weight loss efforts. Create both long-term and short-term weight loss goals to help stay motivated. Review your progress toward the goals on a weekly basis.

Step 3

Weigh yourself on a regular basis to monitor your progress. According to the American Council on Exercise, this allows you to recognize weight gain and get it under control before you regain a lot of weight.

Step 4

Search for new healthy recipes to spice up meal time so you don't get bored or reach for unhealthy foods. Plan out your meals to include healthy whole grains, vegetables, fruits and lean protein to support weight loss.

Step 5

Schedule your workouts when they are convenient. Write the workout in your planner to remind you. This may make you less likely to skip workouts.

Step 6

Try a different form of aerobic exercise to burn calories. Variety in your workout helps keep you interested, making you more likely to exercise regularly. You also work different muscle groups.

Step 7

Lift weights or participate in another form of strength training to build lean muscle, which burns calories faster. A more toned body and the increased calorie burning may help motivate you to stick with your weight loss program.

Step 8

Post motivational notes for yourself to boost your attitude toward the weight loss program. Practice positive self talk by praising yourself for your efforts and focusing on your achievements rather than negatives.
