How to Increase the Alkaline in the Body

In order to maintain your overall health, you must maintain the right pH balance for your body. pH is a scale which determines the alkalinity or acidity of a certain substance. This scale goes from 0 to 15 with the lower numbers being acidic and the higher numbers representing alkalinity. According to Dr. Denice Moffat of the Natural Health Techniques website, the ideal pH number for a human is slightly more alkaline at 7.3 to 7.6. If your body is too acidic, you can have a host of health problems, which will cause you to make adjustments in your diet and lifestyle.

Step 1

Purchase a pH kit from a pharmacy and use it daily. This will give an indication of what your body's alkalinity is. Alkalinity is any number that is above 7.0 on the pH scale.

Step 2

Drink your daily recommended amount of water each day in order to flush your system. The International Sports Medicine Institute recommends at least 1/2 ounce of water per pound of weight. Therefore, if you weigh 150 pounds, you need at least 75 ounces of water, or almost ten 8-ounce glasses.

Step 3

Introduce foods that are high in alkaline. Most of the alkalinity you can get from food comes from fruits and vegetables, so you need to add these foods to your diet. The U. S. Department of Agriculture recommends three to five servings of vegetables and two to four servings of fruit per day.

Step 4

Begin cutting back on foods that are high in acid. These types of foods include eggs, fish, sour cream and grains. Your body can become acidic when you ingest these types of foods in a higher quantity than foods high in alkalinity.

Step 5

Exercise at least 30 minutes daily. The American Heart Association recommends this amount as a good starting point to a healthy lifestyle. Exercising can reduce stress, which is a contributing factor to acid in the body. By removing the stress, you can help raise the alkalinity level in your body.
