Columbus, Georgia, is a medium-sized town located on the Chattahoochee river. The area offers a variety of activities, from the standard vacation activities like shopping, sampling local restaurants and to more Columbus-specific activities like exploring the many outdoor pursuits the town has to offer.

Uptown Columbus

Uptown Columbus has been undergoing a business improvement program since 1999. The program has business owners paying extra tax to do business there, in exchange for employing numerous people whose job it is to help tourists. These job sectors break down into three groups: security staff, cleaning staff and "purple people" whose job is to direct you to places of interest or to help you with information in any way they can. The revamping of businesses means that Uptown Columbus is an easily-accessible place to go shopping, dining or simply a night out. There are many specialty shops, like Sister Wig and Suit City in addition to the restaurants and bars like The Market Fresh Food Joint and the Roadhouse bar.

Midtown Columbus

Midtown is not a commercial area like Uptown Columbus but it is still worth a look. This is because it has a large number of homes built in the town's early days of the 1920s to1950s. For those interested in residential architecture, this area is a must-see.

Coca Cola Space Science Center

The Coca Cola Space Science Center funded by Coca Cola and affiliated with Columbus State University is a museum that focus is on all things space, and to that end it even has a seven flight simulator and a large planetarium. However, the Center doesn't just simulate space -- there are a large number of high-quality telescopes that visitors can use to actually see space. The Space Science Center is open until 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays so that visitors can take advantage of these telescopes. As of September 2010, admission was $6 for adults and $4 for children.

Chattahoochee River Walk

If it's a nice day, you can go for a walk along the Chattahoochee River -- a paved trail that lies adjacent to the river. The 15-mile paved pathway is essentially for anyone from moderate fitness levels to avid athletes. There are 11 access points to the 15-mile trail so you don't necessarily have to walk the entire thing.

Linwood Cemetery

Another one of Columbus's outdoor attractions is the Linwood Cemetery, which is designed to look beautiful in life in spite of its subject matter. This means it is both a good place to go for a walk and a good place to get a sense of some of Columbus' history -- there are many notable Confederate veterans buried here, which reflects Columbus' role in the traumatic war between the states.
