Just for fun and the love of fishing or as an educational resource about our natural environment, fishing clubs throughout Pennsylvania have much to offer the citizens of this state. The groups vary from ones dedicated to a certain species of fish to others whose love of all fish and everything that goes along with it is the primary reason. Fishing clubs bring people together in a community environment to share their passion for this water sport.
Fishing Appreciation
The purpose of these clubs vary but all are dedicated to the education and appreciation of sport fishing. Many of the clubs have programs for kids that involve competitions which intend to foster an appreciation for fishing with the local youth. The Columbia County Bassmasters holds the Casting Kids Competition with the challenge focused on flip, pitch and cast.
Women's Fishing Clubs
To encourage women of any skill level to participate in sport fishing some clubs are designed especially to empower women. The Delaware Valley Women's Fly Fishing Association offers a friendly and supportive environment for women to fly-fish together and to network and make new friends.
Conservation and Restoration
Conservation and respect for the environment is the mission for many of the Pennsylvania fishing clubs. The Dame Juliana League is designed to educate their members on the restoration and conservation of trout fishery of French Creek. Penn's Woods West Trout Unlimited is working to improve and protect the trout waterways in western Pennsylvania. Meetings are held monthly and open to the public.
Club Websites
The websites for each club carry a vast amount of information for anyone interested in joining a fishing club. Many feature web pages filled with photographs of members while others provide weather reports, fishing reports and seasonal fishing patterns as well as tide and moon calendars. The Peace Valley Bass Anglers has a complete tournament schedule for its 20 members and meetings are held the first Tuesday of the month. The Yough Walleye Association has a listing of all current officers and contact information and results of recent tournaments and events.
Fishing License
A fishing license is required for anyone 16 years or older. Discounts are available for military personnel and seniors; disabled veterans may qualify for a free license. You can purchase your license at Licensing Issuing Agents, Fish and Boat Commission offices or the County Treasurer's Office. If you are visiting the state you can get one-day, three-day or seven-day tourist licenses.
