Dramamine, generic name dimenhydrinate, is an antihistamine that is used to treat motion sickness symptoms such as dizziness, nausea and vomiting. It is a first-generation antihistamine. In addition to blocking the histamine response, this drug also interacts with the area in the brain that is involved in nausea and vomiting, hence its effectiveness at alleviating motion sickness. For the prevention of motion sickness, apply the patch 12 hours before traveling.
Drowsiness
Histamines in the central nervous system act to increase wakefulness via the H1 receptor. Since dramamine is an antihistamine, it may cause drowsiness.
Sensory Effects
Possible side effects that impact the sensory system are ringing in the ears, blurred vision, worsening or new dizziness and even problems with coordination. These symptoms should go away eventually. If they do not or if they are severe, you should contact your physician.
Heart Problems
A serious side effect of this medication is fast, pounding or irregular heartbeat. If you have this, you should contact your health care practitioner immediately.
Dryness
First generation antihistamines, such as Dramamine, may cause mucous membranes to dry out, resulting in dry eyes, nose, mouth or throat.
