Curly hair is mysterious and sexy. It can also hide flaws, such as an uneven haircut or split ends. Curly hair can be a fun change for someone whose hair is usually straight. It can add volume and body to your hair. People who have slightly curly or wavy hair may want to make their hair even curlier, and some people with straight hair want to add curls for a special event or just for a change of pace.
Step 1
Change wavy hair to curly hair. After showering, towel dry hair, then apply hairspray or mousse throughout the hair. These products will help hair hold the curl longer. Flip your hair upside down and scrunch into curls with your hand. Blow-dry your hair while scrunching it. Use a diffuser on the blow-dryer to avoid excess frizz.
Step 2
Use a curling iron. It can be a time-consuming task to curl an entire head of straight hair. Go to a stylist and have her curl your hair for a special event, ask a friend to help or do it yourself. It will be easier for another person to curl your hair with an iron, because she can work with the back of your head easier. Wash and completely dry your hair. Pin top layers of your hair on top of your head. Curl the bottom layers first, and let the remaining layers down little by little until the entire head of hair has been curled. Add hairspray to keep your hair in place.
Step 3
Put curlers in overnight. Wash your hair the night before you want curls. Towel dry your hair, but make sure it is a little damp. Apply gel or mousse throughout the hair so the curls will hold better. Starting with the bottom layers of hair, curl strands around the curlers and fasten them. When you remove the curlers the next morning, you will have curly hair. There are many different sizes and styles of curlers, so chose the curlers that fit your preferences. The smaller the curler, the tighter curl you will get.
Step 4
Consider a perm. Your stylist can give you permanent curls in about one or two hours. The stylist applies chemicals to the hair that allow the perm to work, but can cause damage to the hair. Perm stands for permanent, but as hair grows out, you may need to re-perm your hair so the straight roots match the rest of your hair.
Tips and Warnings
- Curly hair tends to frizz easily. Add a dab of frizz control lotion to hair before curling it. Add frizz spray to tame and touch up curls throughout the day. Do not brush curly hair, except to detangle it as soon as you get out of the shower. Brushing curly hair will cause your hair to frizz and poof, or it will simply make the curls straighten.
