Eye exercises for nearsightedness are designed to improve your ability to see things from far away. According to MayoClinic.com, nearsightedness often runs in families and can present itself early in life, or develop gradually over time. Many eye exercises for nearsightedness focus on strengthening your eye muscles in an attempt to improve your overall ability to focus your eyes correctly.

Eye Finger Exercise

This eye finger exercise will help improve your ability to focus on things that are far away from you. Start by standing with your back straight and your knees slightly bent in the center of a room. Lift your right index finger up and hold it a few inches from your face. Make sure that there is a poster or picture on the wall located behind your finger. Focus in on the tip of your finger, making sure that you can see the finger clearly before shifting your gaze to the back wall. Quickly shift your focus to the back wall and try to make out the image on the wall. To start, stand only a few feet from the wall. As you improve, move further and further away until you can see the image on the wall from a greater distance.

Eye Reading Exercise

This eye reading exercise will improve your nearsightedness through long-distance reading. With a friend or family member, grab a basic eye exam chart and walk into the center of a room. Walk to the wall of one side of the room and stand up straight with your back against the wall. Have your friend hold the eye chart at eye level and walk toward you until you can properly see all of the letters in focus. From here, have your friend take a half step back, giving you a second for your eyes to adjust. Try to read out all of the letters. If you do not get them right, have your friend take a half step back toward you. Each time you read the letters correctly, your friend will move back. Perform this exercise for weeks or even months to improve your vision.

Nearsighted Eye Cupping

This eye cupping exercise is designed to relieve tension in your eye muscles, allowing them to relax and focus. Sit down in a chair with your back straight and feet planted firmly on the floor. Place your elbows down on a table in front of you and cover your eyes with your hands. Make sure that each hand is cupping an eye and not applying too much pressure. While in this position, relax your eye muscles and slowly rub your eyes in a clockwise motion. In addition to performing these exercises alone, they are also a good break in between other, more rigorous eye exercises.
