Tylenol PM is an over-the-counter medication that contains two active ingredients: acetaminophen and diphenhydramine hydrochloride. Available in several forms, the medication helps treat pain and sleeplessness. The combination of medication may help an individual achieve a restful night with aches and pains. The two active ingredients in Tylenol PM may cause an exacerbation in some medical conditions or medical complications.

Uses

Acetaminophen is a fever reducer and a pain reliever. The medication may help treat conditions such as arthritis pain, headaches and muscle pain. Diphenhydramine is an antihistamine that treats conditions such as itching, sneezing and watery eyes caused by allergies. A side effect of diphenhydramine is drowsiness and is what may help an individual to rest. The combination of medications may also provide relief of symptoms of the influenza virus or the common cold, according to Drugs.com.

Availability

Tylenol PM is available in four different forms. Geltabs, caplets and rapid-release gelcaps are all pill form and a vanilla liquid option. Tylenol PM is not for use by children under the age of 12, according to McNeil Consumer Healthcare Division of McNeil-PPC, Inc., the manufacturer of the medication.

Dosing

Recommended dosage for Tylenol PM is two pills---in any of the available forms---or two tablespoons of the liquid medication at bedtime. The amount of acetaminophen for the dose is 1,000 mg and the amount of diphenhydramine hydrochloride at the same time. Individuals should not take more than the recommended dosage in a 24-hour period.

Side Effects

In addition to the desired effect of drowsiness, possible side effects of Tylenol PM include dry eyes, dizziness, blurred vision and ringing in the ears, according to Drugs.com. Serious adverse reactions to the medication include confusion, nervousness and decreased urine output. Symptoms of liver damage, which may occur when taking products containing acetaminophen, include clay-colored stools, nausea and jaundice.

Contraindications

While taking Tylenol PM, an individual should avoid other medications containing the same active ingredients to avoid possible overdose. An individual should not take more than 4,000 mg of acetaminophen each day due to the possible liver damage that may occur, according to the manufacturer of the medication. Acetaminophen may cause severe liver damage. Drinking alcoholic beverages can increase the risk of damage to the liver.
