Tai chi is a series of exercises performed for physical health. However, it is actually a form of Chinese kung fu, from the school of internal martial arts known as neijia, focusing on relaxation and internal energy, or chi. It can be practiced for health benefits, traditional martial arts applications or for performance. Chen-style tai chi orignates from the Chen village in Henan province and is one of the most popular forms of tai chi, as of 2010. Tai chi practice brings an awareness of the body, with improved flexibility, posture, breathing and circulation.

Find a class that teaches Chen-style tai chi. Chen-style tai chi is the oldest style, though others, such as Yang style, are more popular because they have been simplified. Chen tai chi uses lower stances and bursts of explosive power along with the more sedate movements normally associated with tai chi.

Check your instructor's lineage. Tai chi instructors should be able to show who has taught them. A qualified teacher is important because tai chi is a subtle art that cannot be properly learned from a book or instructional video.

Practice your forms regularly. Tai chi is an internal martial art, meaning that feeling and controlling the body is your main concern. You need to be able to concentrate on the precision of your movements, rather than what move you need to do next.

Focus on the physical alignment of your body as you train. Your movements should be relaxed and powerful, and you should concentrate on your breathing. Improving your posture and your physiology are important parts of tai chi and will benefit your everyday health.

Explore tai chi's other possibilities. Although the long forms are the best-known elements of tai chi practice, it is also a powerful martial art that encourages you to develop sensitivity and awareness through partner drills such as push hands. Tai chi also incorporates meditative practices such as chi kung, which focus on breathing and mental clarity.
