Obesity is at an epidemic proportion in America, according to the Endocrine Society, and many people are seeking diets and treatments to lose weight. The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends slow, steady weight loss to lose a few pounds each week. This is the best way to prevent the weight from coming back months or years later.

Meat

Meats contain a large amount of protein. Eating protein with every meal makes the stomach feel full, suggests the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Protein takes longer to digest than carbohydrates so it slows the digestion so that hunger returns more slowly.

Fish

Fish is a lean protein recommended by the University of Maryland Medical Center. Fish is low in calories and, unlike meat, also contains healthy omega-3 fatty acids. The center suggests replacing meat with fish occasionally to help lose weight.

Fruits and Vegetables

Eating foods with high nutrient content and lower calories is advised by the University of Maryland Medical Center. The center recommends replacing starches, such as bread and potatoes, with salads, apples, carrots, and other filling and high-nutrient foods.

Low-Calorie Snacks

Eating low-calorie snacks can be filling and stave off hunger. Some low-calorie snacks to consider include small servings of carrots, apple slices, air-popped popcorn, yogurt, almonds and raisins.

Breakfast

New research shows that eating breakfast helps people lose weight, according to a report from the Endocrine Society Annual Meeting in 2009. This is because breakfast jump-starts the metabolism. Twenty people participated in the study at the Imperial College in London. The study showed that skipping breakfast made the brain want to heat high-calorie foods, but this desire was reduced when the subjects ate breakfast.
