Foods that are high in cholesterol can contribute to health problems. This is especially true if the foods that are high in cholesterol are also high in saturated fats. Foods that contain egg yolks, meat, some poultry and higher fat milk products are often high in cholesterol as are cookies, cake and other products with transfats. Deep fried foods are often high in cholesterol and saturated fats. You should not have more than 200 mg of cholesterol in your diet in any 24-hour period according to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.
Pan-fried beef liver
This is perhaps the worst food you can eat in terms of cholesterol and saturated fat. Beef liver, which is high in protein, contains 410 mg of cholesterol in a 3-oz. serving. Since the typical serving of beef liver is more like 9 oz., that's an eye-popping 1,230 mg of cholesterol in one meal.
Eggs
Eggs are very high in cholesterol. Most people believe that it eggs fried or scrambled in butter are the biggest culprits. But it is the egg itself. One boiled egg has 225 mg of cholesterol in it. If you are having two or three in one sitting, that can be 450 or 675 mg of cholesterol. Frying the eggs or scrambling them in butter can add another 200 mg of cholesterol to your digestive system.
Stewed chicken
Many people believe that chicken is healthy and cholesterol-free. If you are eating skinless white meat chicken, you are eating healthy food that is low in cholesterol. However, stewed dark meat chicken is nearly as high in cholesterol as beef. One cup of stewed chicken contains 300 mg of cholesterol and most times a normal serving is 2 cups, or 600 mg of cholesterol.
Sponge cake
Sponge cake is often topped with fruit, chocolate syrup or ice cream. This makes for a mountain of cholesterol. A 3.5 ounce portion of sponge cake will 260 mg of cholesterol. Add in the ice cream or chocolate syrup and it adds up to nearly 400 mg of cholesterol that goes into your body with one portion of a buttery, spongy desert.
