The thinning, drying and wrinkling of skin are, to a certain degree, unavoidable effects of the aging process. However, Medical News Today notes that excessive UV light exposure is one of the primary causes of premature aging and accounts for why wrinkling often develops first on areas like the face, neck and hands. Wrinkling in areas like the back may be related more to genetic factors and the natural aging process. Luckily, there are clinical treatments available that may improve the appearance of wrinkles on the back.

Step 1

Consult with your doctor about the use of prescription topical retinoid lotions for your back wrinkles. Apply the lotion to your back wrinkles and leave it on for as long as instructed by your doctor. Topical retinoids are derived from vitamin A. They help to increase skin cell turnover. The removal of dead skin cells helps to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and promote new skin growth.

Step 2

Speak with a specialist about soft tissue fillers for your back wrinkles. With such a procedure, collagen or a sample of your own fat is injected into the wrinkle's crevice. As the solution is injected, the wrinkle plumps out to the point where it is even with the rest of the skin.

Step 3

Schedule a chemical peel at a dermatological clinic to treat your back wrinkles. An acid solution is applied to the wrinkles. The acid burns away the upper layers of skin and, if required, some of the lower layer. This removes superficial wrinkling and shocks the body into collagen production, which will encourage the growth of new, smoother skin.

Step 4

Arrange an appointment with your doctor to learn more about laser resurfacing for back wrinkles. This treatment involves wounding the skin with a heated laser. The epidermal, or upper skin, layers are burned away and the dermal, or lower, layers are warmed. As well as removing superficial wrinkles, this technique sends the skin into trauma. The natural healing processes of the body heal the wound through the growth of new, more youthful skin.

Step 5

Schedule a consultation to discuss dermabrasion treatments for back wrinkles. The epidermal layers are eroded via the use of a pulsating wire brush. The depth of the wrinkles and their overall appearance are reduced by this method while collagen production is increased in the body to repair the wound. As the new skin is formed, it pushes up the dermal layers to form a new, less wrinkled epidermis.

Tips and Warnings

  • Retin-A and Tazorac are examples of topical retinoids that your doctor may prescribe. Soft tissue fillers, although highly effective, only last a few months. On such a large surface area as the back, they may not be ideal as clinics often charge by the syringe. Chemical peels and laser resurfacing come in varying strengths. Because skin is thicker on the back than it is on the face, where these treatments are also used, stronger versions of chemical peels and lasers may be used to achieve the best results.
  • Redness, soreness, bruising, swelling, scabbing and bleeding are to be expected. Most of the side effects will subside within a few days but redness can remain for several months, specifically nine in the case of dermabrasion. Despite the effectiveness of these treatments, Mayo Clinic is keen to point out that nothing stops the natural aging process. Results may vary depending upon the location and severity of the wrinkles.
