Although alcohol and drug abuse has declined steadily among American youth, it is still a serious problem forcing many adults and teen to seek professional treatment. The National Institute on Drug Abuse monitors drug and alcohol trends in the United States. In 2008, the agency reported that alcohol abuse among adolescents age 12 to 20 has steadily declined since 2002. During the same period, illicit drug use declined across all age groups. Still, in 2006, 2.5 million people obtained substance abuse treatment at specialized programs, according to NIDA.
