If you are allergic to gluten, a protein substance found in wheats and grains, dining out may be difficult. Gluten senstitivity, according to the Gluten Intolerance Group, or GIG, is characterized by distress after eating gluten-containing foods. For some this is a mere intolerance, while for others it can mean a more serious condition. In either case, gluten must be avoided. Fortunately, gluten-free foods and meals are increasingly included in restaurant menu choices. The GIG provides a search engine to find restaurants with gluten-free options.

Outback Steakhouse

The Outback Steakhouse chain provides gluten-free options to diners. In fact, this restaurant has a separate menu for those wishing to avoid gluten, with tips for how to order your food. Some choices, like their Ahi tuna appetizer or their Outback Special signature steak, are completely gluten free. Other menu items, such as the baby back ribs or burgers, have a recommendation to avoid the seasonings or bread to keep the order gluten-free. This chain even allows you to bring in your own bread.

Burton's Grill

Another chain, this restaurant can be found on GIG's website, and garnered positive reviews from diners. The restaurant's website claims that many items are naturally gluten-free, but they also provide options to make certain meals suit your dietary needs. Their burgers come without the buns and most of their sides include risotto or potatoes. The GIG reviews state that the servers are knowledgeable about gluten, and other food, allergies, but inform them about your preferences immediately.

Lilli and Loo

If you are visiting New York City, you will actually find quite a few gluten-free restaurants. One in particular, Lilli and Loo, is a Pan-Asian cuisine restaurant that offers gluten-free dining influenced by foods from China, Japan and Thailand. Their gluten-free menu includes sushi dishes like their Fresh Saigon Roll, Thai options like Tom Yum seafood soup and Masaman curry, and even a Chinese food staple, General T'so's chicken. This restaurant also earned positive reviews from diners on the GIG website for both the food and their consideration for gluten-intolerant patrons.

Piazza Sorento

Even Italian restaurants can adapt to the need for gluten-free options. This restaurant, located in Hershey, Pennsylvania, even places a tag on the plates of gluten-less meals. They have traditional bread appetizers such as bruschetta, pasta dishes like ravioli and lasagna, pizzas, and desserts that all maintain the gluten-free standards. The menu for gluten-intolerant patrons is vast, so you will not feel limited in your options. In addition, reviews state the portions are large, so bring your appetite and ask for a to-go box.
