Proper riding gear makes your bike ride more comfortable, whether you commute on a bike, race competitively or ride for exercise. Comfortable cycling pants ease discomfort caused by friction between your body and the seat, usually by adding a padded area inside the pants. They feature stretchy fabric for unrestricted movement as you bike. This makes cycling easier and may help you perform better, according to REI. Shorts are the common style for cycling, but there are also full pants, sometimes called bike tights, and knickers, which go to just below the knee.
Step 1
Write a list that highlights your typical riding habits, such as the amount of time you ride and the time of year. Consider the problems you normally have with chafing or irritation while riding your bike, which can help you choose the best pair of cycling pants.
Step 2
Inspect the construction of the different biking pants. Note the number of panels on the pants, which are typically either six of eight, according to REI. More panels sometimes means a more comfortable fit, but the quality of the construction is a better criteria for comparison.
Step 3
Look at the padding inside each pair of pants, which may be made from open-cell foam, a gel and open-cell foam combination, or closed-cell foam, according to REI. Feel the differences in the liners to help determine your personal preference. Note the size, shape and thickness of the padding.
Step 4
Inspect the differences in the waistbands of each pair. REI notes that some women's cycling pants offer a yoga-style waistband for greater comfort.
Step 5
Test each pair of cycling pants by trying them on. Test out the pants while riding a bicycle if possible, noting the comfort level of each pair as compared to the others. Look for a pair of pants that are tight with a close fit, which reduces rubbing and irritation, the League of American Bicyclists recommends.
Step 6
Ride for a longer distance once you purchase the pants. Note the most comfortable features and the things you would change for your next purchase.
