Polk County in central Florida is an area with many lakes with fishing camps offering both guided fishing and simple lakefront accommodations for the group seeking to fish the lakes on their own. When you stay in Polk County, you will be close to Kissimmee and Lakeland. This area of Florida also puts you within a reasonable driving distance to both the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean.

Weather

With summer highs in the low-90s and winter highs in the mid-70s, Polk County is a fishing destination which can be enjoyed year-round. March through May provide the highest number of sunny days on average. If you travel to Polk County in June through August, you may experience the rainiest months of the year.

Guide Services

Polk County offers a variety of fishing guide services. These services offer chartered fishing with an experienced guide who will help direct you to the hotspots in the area for various species of fish. Being at the mid-point of the state, they can also take you to the gulf or the ocean for saltwater fishing. Services such as Southern Outdoorsman Guide Service work in conjunction with area resorts to make your vacation as affordable as possible. If you need a fishing license, they have the resources to help you obtain a license for the time you are in town.

Campgrounds

Polk County campgrounds are often located on lakefront property. When staying at campgrounds such as Bud's RV Park and Marina, you will have access to a variety of amenities that cater to the fisherman. You will be able to launch your boat from the park's property, purchase bait on-site and purchase boat oil and gasoline without leaving the campground. As of 2010, rates are available for nightly, weekly or monthly camping. Boat slips are available for an extra charge.

Resorts

Resorts are an excellent option if you are hoping to spend some quiet time on the lake. But your family may prefer a slightly more traditional campground. Camp Mack's River Resort located in Lake Wales offers a variety of accommodations for your fishing vacation. If you are unable to bring your boat, the resort has pontoons and jon boats available for rent. While you are fishing, your family can explore the nature trails at the resort. Afterward you can join your family for a sunset cruise on the Kissimmee chain of lakes. An airboat tour of the chain is sure to be a favorable memory for your entire family.

Freshwater Licenses

If you are going to fish on the lakes in Florida, you will mostly likely be required to obtain a fishing license. Some exceptions exist if you are under age 16 or if you are a Florida resident over age 65. As of September 2010, the annual fishing license fee for a Florida resident is $17. For non-residents, the fees range from $17 for a three-day license to $47 for an annual freshwater license.
