Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) equipment is essential for treating those with sleep apnea. Because the machine must be used nightly, it is important to clean it daily. CPAP equipment uses water, providing a moist environment where bacteria can grow. Infections can occur when proper cleaning is neglected. Cleaning the mask, which comes into direct contact with your face, is especially important.
Step 1
Wash your hands with soap and water prior to handling your face mask.
Step 2
Take the headgear off the mask. Disconnect the tubing from it as well.
Step 3
Dip a soft, white cloth into a mild detergent that does not contain lotion, perfume or dye. Wipe both sides of the mask thoroughly.
Step 4
Inspect the mask for residual oils. Look especially carefully in the area of the cushion flaps, which can be difficult to clean thoroughly. Rewash with detergent as necessary.
Step 5
Soak your mask in a mixture of one part white vinegar to three parts distilled water. Wait 20 minutes before removing. This step needs to be done once a week rather than daily.
Step 6
Rinse your face mask in distilled water. Let the water pour over the entire surface of both sides of the face mask. Repeat a second time with new water.
Step 7
Let your mask air dry. Hang it up to promote complete drying while making sure it does not come into contact with other objects. Do not blow dry your mask.
Step 8
Reattach the tubing and head gear to the face mask. Wipe the mask with unscented baby wipes just prior to use.
Tips and Warnings
- Always follow your CPAP unit's manufacturer's directions for caring for your equipment.
- Do not use alcohol-based products to clean your face mask. Do not use bleach or other harsh chemicals on your CPAP equipment. Never place your mask in a clothes washer or dryer.
