Cytotec, known also by the generic name misoprostol, is a synthetic prostaglandin used to prevent NSAID-induced ulcers. Patients taking NSAIDs---nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs---are at increased risk of ulcers because NSAIDs damage stomach lining. Cytotec protects the stomach and decreases production of stomach acid in patients taking NSAIDs for chronic inflammatory conditions. It is also combined with other medications to induce abortion and labor. Cytotec may cause several side effects.
Respiratory Effects
According to Drugs.com, Cytotec may cause bronchospasm, bronchitis and pneumonia. Bronchospasm is a sudden constriction of the muscles found on the bronchi walls which results in the narrowing and obstruction of the respiratory airway. Bronchospasm prevents air from reaching the lungs which leads to breathing difficulties. Cytotec should be avoided by patients with asthma, bronchitis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease because the drug may worsen these conditions.
Cardiovascular Effects
Drugs.com states that Cytotec may affect the heart and circulatory system and should therefore be used with caution in patients with cardiovascular problems. Cytotec may cause vasoconstriction of the muscles of the heart leading to chest pain, high blood pressure and abnormal heart rhythms. Cytotec may also cause low blood pressure, inflammation of veins, increased cardiac enzymes, syncope, edema, heart attack, blood clots and stroke.
Nervous System
According to Drugs.com, Cytotec may affect the nervous system and lead to increased anxiety, change in appetite, depression, drowsiness, dizziness, thirst, impotence, loss of libido, sweating increase, neuropathy, neurosis and confusion.
