Avoid skipping meals, which could lead to overeating later. Write out a menu for the week and include variety in each food category to avoid burn-out. Fruits and vegetables play a major role in a healthful diet; include starchy, leafy green, dark yellow and orange varieties for nutritional balance. For variety in your grains, include healthful whole grains such as quinoa, bulgar, brown rice and whole wheat pasta.

Eating healthier and losing weight reduces your risk for certain diseases including hypertension, Type 2 Diabetes, and endometrial, breast, and colon cancer, as well as for respiratory problems, osteoarthritis and sleep apnea, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
