You can use a combination of diet, herbal teas and enemas to cleanse out your colon. Your colon, or large intestine, is the last step in your digestive process and it is mainly in charge of absorbing minerals and water from food that has been deconstructed by your stomach acids and your small intestine. If you don't have enough moisture in the mucus membranes of your colon, you may experience constipation and discomfort. Cleaning your colon will help restore the health of your mucus membranes as well as provide a healthy environment where the elimination of fecal matter after water absorption can be done optimally.
Step 1
Drink a psyllium drink by mixing psyllium powder with water every morning for three days. It will act as a laxative on your digestive tract and will help cleanse out your colon. Psyllium is the seed of the herb plantain, also known botanically as Plantago officinalis, according to herbalist and author Rosemary Gladstar, "Family Herbal -- A Guide To Living Life With Energy, Health And Vitality." Gladstar says psyllium is highly fibrous. You can find psyllium powder at your local health food stores or online.
Step 2
Incorporate highly fibrous foods in your diet such as fruits, vegetables, whole grain and leafy greens. Eating high fiber foods help clean the digestive system. Also, foods rich in fiber tend to be lower in calories and fat.
Step 3
Schedule an appointment with a clinic to have an enema or a colon irrigation therapy session, which consists of introducing water through your anus with a certain amount of pressure, and then releasing the pressure in order to prompt your large intestines to have peristaltic movements that help evacuate fecal matter that may be stuck. Only have a colonic done if you are sure of the implications and feel comfortable with your practitioner.
Step 4
Boil a cup of filtered water in a small pot and add 2 tsp. of organic marshmallow root. Let the herb simmer for at least five minutes and then remove from heat and strain. Marshmallow root is mucilaginous, meaning it becomes slimy when moistened, according to the book "The Dictionary of Modern Herbalism," by herbalist Simon Mills. Its mucilaginous quality will coat your entire digestive tract, soothing any irritation or ulcers along the way---and it will help restore the natural mucous lining of your colon's walls. You can take your marshmallow tea three times per day with probiotic capsules that will help restore the flora in your gut.
