For the health and safety of swimmers, swimming pools must be disinfected against bacteria. Chlorine has historically been the most popular choice for pool disinfection. In 1936, chlorine was not readily available because of World War II. At this time, bromine became the alternative disinfectant choice. Although not currently as popular in today's environment, bromine does have some advantages over chlorine.

Stability in Warmer Temperatures

Bromine is more stable in warmer waters than chlorine--one reason why bromine is often used in spas and hot tubs. This also benefits outdoor pools in warm regions, not only due to warmer pool temperatures, but because bromine doesn't dissipate as readily in sunlight, making it more effective than chlorine for eradicating bacteria.

Less Odor and Skin Sensitivity

One of the most common complaints about chlorine is the intense, harsh odor, especially if a pool area is not well ventilated. Chlorine can also irritate the skin and eyes and affect hair texture and color. According to the Division of Environmental Health, bromine does not produce these effects. You will generally see less skin, hair and eye irritation issues in a pool that is disinfected with bromine.

Efficiency

Bromine is a more efficient disinfectant as it dissolves in water better than chlorine. When chlorine neutralizes bacteria, most of the chemical is used up in the process. This amount is then burned off along with the contaminants during the weekly shock treatment. When bromine neutralizes bacteria, a higher amount of the chemical is left behind and remains active. Even after the shock treatment, this extra bromine continues to sanitize your pool.
