Dumbbells are a traditional and effective way to achieve stamina and build muscle in your upper body. A standard set of dumbbells at a gym typically contains weights between 5 lbs. and 60 lbs. or more. The latest dumbbell fitness technology, however, condenses all of the different dumbbell weights into single units that are adjustable. Two popular examples of this technology are PowerBlock and Bowflex SelectTech dumbbells.
Function
Both the PowerBlock and SelectTech dumbbells serve the same purpose, replacing traditional racks of free weights with two dumbbell units that can be adjusted to any necessary weight. Once an appropriate weight is selected, both types of dumbbells can be used for exercises like bicep curls, dumbbell presses or flies.
Types
As of September 2010, Bowflex offers two models of SelectTech dumbbells: the 1090 and 552. The 1090 model has adjustable weights between 10 and 90 lbs. while the 552 features weights between 5 and 52.5 lbs.
The variety of PowerBlock dumbbells available is more expansive, featuring models five ranging from the Classic 45 set, which has weights between 5 and 45 lbs., to the Elite 5-130, which can be set between 5 and 130 lbs. per dumbbell. PowerBlock also offers a variety of expansion plates that can be added to each model if more weight is desired.
Features
Bowflex SelectTech dumbbells utilize a dial system to select the weight for each dumbbell. The 552 model can change the weight in 2.5 lb. increments while the 1090 model changes in 5 lb. increments. Both of the Bowflex models come with a fitness guide of more than 30 exercises and have a two-year warranty.
The PowerBlock dumbbells adjust weights using a removable U-pin, much like the weights of a home gym with plates would use. The weights can be adjusted in 2.5 or 5 lb. increments depending on the model. Both types of dumbbells can be purchased with a workout bench and dumbbell stand for an extra cost.
Size
Bowflex SelectTech dumbbells are considerably larger than PowerTech dumbbells, measuring 27 ¾ inches in length, 20 ½ inches in width and 24 ½ inches in height. SelectTech dumbbells are shaped like traditional dumbbells and adjustments to how you do exercises may need to be made due to the large size.
PowerBlock dumbbells are rectangular in shape and measure 6 inches square for width and height. The dumbbells vary in length between 12 and 19 inches depending on the model that you purchase.
Expert Insight
According to personal trainer and webmaster for the Exercise Equipment Review Journal, Brett Spottke, the functionality and style of the Bowflex SelectTech dumbbells are friendlier to the average user. However, he recommends PowerTech dumbbells to serious lifters and bodybuilders because they come with heavier plates and are slightly more durable if dropped.
