According to Dr. Peter D'Adamo your blood type gives you a view into your genetics, susceptibilities and strengths in regards to your health and the effects the food you eat have on your body. Dr. D'Adamo is a naturopathic physician, author of the book "Eat Right 4 Your Type," published in 1996. In this book, diets based on your blood type are explored and explained. If you are blood type O, you have the oldest blood type and can be predisposed to ulcers and thyroid disorders. Eating a healthy diet for your blood type will help prevent these disorders and give you a good foundation for optimal health.
Step 1
Incorporate animal protein in at least two meals of your day. Eat steak for lunch and chicken for dinner or a fish sandwich for brunch and lamb for a meal later in your day. According to Dr. Michael Lam in his article "Blood Type Diet - Type O," published on his website, blood type O individuals have a very high stomach-acid content and you must eat meats to give your body something hardy to digest and metabolize in order to prevent stomach ulcers. Bacon, ham, pork and octopus are some exceptions for your blood type and should be avoided.
Step 2
Eliminate dairy products from your diet as much as possible. Dr. Lam lists butter, feta, farmer and goat cheese as acceptable for blood type O and all other dairy products unacceptable, in his chart designed for this blood type.
Step 3
Use mostly olive oil to cook your meals, as it is one of the best oils for blood type O diet, suggests Dr. D'Adamo. It is a monosaturated oil that positively influences blood type O disease susceptibility. Flaxseed oil is good too, but avoid canola and sesame oils.
Step 4
Restrict your grain intake as much as you can. As a blood type O you particularly don't tolerate whole wheat in any form. Some grains that you can have on an occasional basis are barley, amaranth, rice, millet and spelt, however it is best to avoid grains altogether and focus on a higher protein intake.
Step 5
Eat many leafy greens in every meal, which can include collard greens, spinach, kale, romaine lettuce and broccoli. As a blood type O you can lack clotting factors in your blood, and leafy greens provide vitamin K that can help your blood clot when needed. Other vegetables you can include in your diet are leeks, parsnips, onions, seaweed and turnips.
Step 6
Favor prunes, plums and figs as your source of fruits as a blood type O. These fruits help block polyamine synthesis for blood type O, says Dr. D'Adamo
