Fatty liver is a condition in which there is an excess buildup of fats in the liver cells. It commonly affects people infected with hepatitis, heavy alcoholics and people who are overweight. Common causes of fatty liver, aside from alcoholism and obesity, include toxins and certain medications such as tetracycline (an antibiotic). People with fatty liver usually do not show any symptoms. The disease is usually diagnosed by performing a liver biopsy. By adding the certain foods to your diet, you can effectively strengthen and help reverse a fatty liver.
Step 1
Avoid high-glycemic index foods, such as sugary pastries, french fries, white bread and candy. Instead, consume foods that are low-glycemic index. High-glycemic index foods can make your fatty liver worse and quickly raise your blood glucose (sugar) level. Low-glycemic foods include fresh fruits and vegetables, soy milk, oat bran and peanuts. Eat at least 2 cups of low-glycemic foods every day to help reverse a fatty liver and keep your liver healthy.
Step 2
Drink 2 cups of milk thistle herb tea every day. This herb includes a potent phytochemical called silymarin, which may help your liver break down fats. Add 1 cup of milk thistle leaves to 2 cups of boiling water. Drink one cup in the morning and another before going to bed. You can also take milk thistle capsules. The recommended dosage is one 380mg capsule once daily, with food. You can buy milk thistle herbs and capsules at your local health food store.
Step 3
Drink 2 qts. of purified water every day to help strengthen your liver and keep the food you eat moving through your digestive system. Drinking enough water can also help your liver regulate your cholesterol levels while detoxifying your body of fats.
Step 4
Do high impact exercises for one hour every day, in tandem with eating foods that can eliminate fats from your liver. Getting enough exercise increases the flow of blood to your liver so it can eliminate toxins from your body. Exercising will also strengthen your liver and prevent it from accumulating fat. Examples of high impact exercises include jump rope, running, aerobics and plyometrics.
