A bassinet is a small basket-like bed used for newborn babies. A bassinet is a safer alternative to a crib for an infant, as it reduces the risk of SIDS. Sometimes the mesh around the bassinet can become torn or damaged. Replacing this fabric will make the bassinet safer for your baby and reduce the risk of injury due to hands and feet getting caught in the tear. Fixing the mesh is fairly simple and can be done very quickly.
Fixing the Bassinet Mesh
Step 1
Cut a 24-inch piece of thread. Insert the end of the thread into the needle. Put the ends of the thread together and pull to make them even. Make a knot in the end.
Step 2
Line up the mesh on either side of the tear. Insert the safety pins into the left side of the tear. Push the safety pins through to the other side. Fasten them to secure.
Step 3
Insert the needle into the top left side of the tear. Pull the needle through to the right side. Keep the thread pulled tight. Reinsert the needle into the mesh next to the last stitch. Repeat this process down the length of the tear.
Step 4
Push the needle through the last stitch made. Do not pull the thread tight. Leave a loop in the thread. Pull the needle through the loop. Cut the thread 4 inches from the mended tear. Make a double knot in the ends of the thread. Cut the ends of the thread to complete the project.
Tips and Warnings
- To keep the mesh from fraying or tearing again, you can use craft glue across the edges of the tear before sewing the sides together. If repairing a large area, you may want to consider replacing the entire section of mesh.
- It is important to make sure all of the edges of the mended mesh are smooth. Having protruding edges can cause safety hazards for your baby. Discard any scraps of mesh, as they could cause a potential choking hazard. Cut the thread as close to the mesh as possible. Stray thread could get wound around your baby's limbs, fingers or toes.
