Cell metabolism, also called body metabolism, is a chemical reaction that occurs in body cells. Metabolism is responsible for converting the foods you eat into energy. A person's metabolism varies, based on many different factors. Age, genetics and amount of muscle mass play a role in metabolism. Dietary changes are an effective method for boosting your metabolism, according to Women's Health Magazine.
Step 1
Plan a healthy breakfast each day. Eating breakfast boosts your energy, refuels the body and increases metabolism, according MayoClinic.com. People who don't eat breakfast are more likely to overeat later in the day. Cook egg whites, whole wheat toast and fresh fruits for a mix of protein, whole grains and fruits.
Step 2
Consume coffee each day. According to Women's Health Magazine, women who consume caffeinated coffee have a higher metabolism than women who don't. The central nervous system is stimulated by coffee, making the body work harder. This results in increased metabolic function.
Step 3
Drink ice water to boost metabolism, recommends Women's Health Magazine. When you consume ice water, the body has to work harder to heat the water to the body's temperature. This process increases metabolism.
Step 4
Eat organic produce. According to Women's Health Magazine, dieters who consume high levels of pesticides through produce were found to have disruptions in the thyroid function and mitochondrial activity. This slows down the body's metabolism.
Step 5
Consume freshwater fish. Fish high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, sardines and tuna, appear to send signals to the brain faster. As a result, you're less likely to overeat. These foods are also rich in vitamin D, which assists in preserving muscle tissue, a critical component for enhanced metabolic function.
Step 6
Boost exercise level. Schedule at least 150 minutes of moderate activity each week, recommends the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC. At least two strength-training sessions should also be scheduled.
Tips and Warnings
- Drink plenty of milk, recommends Women's Health Magazine. Foods high in calcium assist in metabolizing fat faster. Consume 8 oz. of low-fat dairy products each day.
- Talk with your doctor before consuming dietary supplements. Many of these supplements claim to boost metabolism, but the drugs aren't regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. Some products may also interact with prescription medications.
