What to Wear for Yoga

You don't need a fancy outfit for yoga. In fact, you probably already have what you need in your closet. If you feel like shopping, it's easy to find clothes designed especially for doing asanas, yoga's physical poses. Above all, what you wear for yoga should be totally comfortable. Your clothes should allow you to bend, stretch or twist without impeding your movement. The Integral Yoga Institute of New York simply recommends that students wear "loose, comfortable clothing." Sherry Roberts, in an article for YogaMovement.com, says that yoga clothes should be something "you can forget about."

Undergarments

Underclothes should provide support, but you shouldn't feel bound by them. Sports bras are fine if they fit well and aren't tight. Men should choose nonrestrictive underwear that provides the support they prefer and will keep their private parts private if they're wearing gym shorts to yoga class.

Tops

A comfortable T-shirt, sweatshirt or Indian kurta will do quite nicely. Leotards are also a good choice. Many women wear a leotard with something like a tunic or big T-shirt over it. Choose something in which you're at ease and won't feel self-conscious. You'll be upside down in some of the yoga poses. Women will want to be sure their breasts stay covered in asanas like the shoulder stand.

Bottoms

You can find yoga pants almost anywhere, from casual clothing chains to high-end department stores. Traditional yoga pants have a drawstring or elastic waist. Again, there's no need to buy something new. You can wear sweatpants, shorts or tights. Choose tights that end at the ankle, to leave your feet bare.

Unitards

Some people like the ease of slipping into a one-piece garment. Many styles of unitards have been designed just for yoga practice.

Footwear

Yoga is usually practiced with bare feet, and this is really the best way to go. Shoes don't allow the needed flexibility. Regular socks can make you slip and lose balance. Non-skid Pilates and yoga socks help to keep your feet covered without the danger of falling. Some people use ballet slippers.

Fabrics

Natural, breathable fabrics are best for yoga. Many companies make yoga clothes that are mostly cotton or rayon with a small percentage of Lycra or spandex---a good combination for yoga movement.

Modesty

Yoga styles differ, and so do guidelines for different yoga studios. Before you go to a new class, call to find out if there are guidelines for attire. At some yoga schools, almost anything goes; but some are more traditional and modest.
