Previcox is a prescription nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, or NSAID, used to alleviate joint swelling and pain in dogs that have osteoarthritis. This medication may also be used to control pain following certain types of surgery. Previcox is administered orally as a chewable tablet as prescribed by a veterinarian. Dog owners should be aware of potential side effects before giving this NSAID to their dog.
Stomach Upset
Dogs treated with Previcox may develop stomach upset side effects. Common gastrointestinal problems include vomiting, diarrhea and appetite changes, according to the FDA. Though Previcox may be taken without food, a dog owner can help limit the development or severity of stomach upset side effects by giving a dog a small snack or meal before dosing. Dogs who excrete dark or bloody stools while taking Previcox should be evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible, as this may be indicative of internal bleeding.
Jaundice
Previcox may cause side effects of jaundice in certain dogs, reports AnimalShelter.org. Affected dogs may develop unusual yellowing of the eyes, skin or gums, and should be taken to a veterinarian for further evaluation and care. Jaundice side effects may be signs of liver damage.
Skin Rash
Skin changes may occur as a side effect of Previcox, according to Merial Limited, the pharmaceutical distributor of this medication. Affected dogs may frequently scratch at red, dry or irritated patches of skin. These side effects are temporary and subside once treatment with this medication ends.
Thirst or Urination Changes
Dogs taking Previcox may exhibit unusual thirst or urination changes as side effects of treatment, the FDA explains. Increased thirst may result in increased or frequent urination, while decreased thirst may cause infrequent urination. A dog owner may also notice that her dog excretes discolored or unusually odorous urine. Dogs who display these side effects should be taken to a veterinarian for additional care, as these Previcox side effects may also be signs of urinary tract or kidney problems.
