A diffuser is a styling implement that attaches to the end of a hair dryer. Using a diffuser helps the warm air from the dryer penetrate the hair and get closer to the scalp. A diffuser also disburses the heat of the hair dryer, making it gentler on your hair. Using a hair diffuser adds body and bounce to even straight hair, but if your hair has a little, or a lot, of natural curl, a diffuser will bring that out. To make your hair curly with a diffuser start with wet, well conditioned hair.
Step 1
Squeeze excess water out of your hair. Be gentle with your hair to prevent it from becoming frizzy later. Use a towel or clean T-shirt and squeeze the hair gently to remove as much moisture as possible. Too much moisture will prolong the drying process and dilute the styling product.
Step 2
Apply mousse or gel to your hair and gently work it through from roots to ends. This will help your hair hold curl.
Step 3
Attach the diffuser to your hair dryer.
Step 4
Hold the diffuser at a 90-degree angle to your head the entire time you are drying your hair. This will force the heated air against the roots, giving it body. For shoulder-length or longer hair, begin by bending over at the waist and blow-drying the back of your hair near the scalp. Flip your head over and move to the sides and front. The entire time that you are blow-drying, use your other hand to squeeze small handfuls of your hair into curls. Concentrate on one section at a time.
Step 5
Finger style hair. Once your hair is dry, use your fingers to create a part and style your hair. Using a brush will create frizz and using a comb will pull the curl out. Finish with a light spritz of hairspray.
Tips and Warnings
- Hair will curl better on wet or humid days Don't expect hair to curl as dramatically as it does with hot rollers or a curling iron, a diffuser helps make the most of your natural hair texture.
