Etodolac ER Side Effects

Etodolac ER is an extended-release prescription medication that contains the active ingredient lodine, a type of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, or NSAID. This medication is indicated to manage pain and inflammation associated with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Patients should discuss the side effects of Etodolac ER with a medical professional before taking this medication.

Upset Stomach

Gastrointestinal side effects may occur in patients receiving treatment with Etodolac ER, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. This medication may induce nausea, heartburn, vomiting or dyspepsia, which may contribute to a temporary decrease in appetite. Though this medication can be taken on an empty stomach, patients can limit their risk of developing stomach upset side effects by eating a small snack or meal before dosing. Patients who notice blood within their vomit should seek medical care immediately, as this side effect may be indicative of internal bleeding.

Bowel Movement Changes

Bowel movement changes may occur following treatment with this NSAID, Drugs.com warns. Patients may experience constipation, which is characterized by difficult or painful bowel movements, or diarrhea, which is characterized by frequent, urgent, loose bowel movements. These bowel changes may cause abdominal cramping, bloating, flatulence or pain in affected patients. Patients who excrete unusually dark or bloody stools should seek prompt care from a medical professional. Bloody stools may be a sign of an intestinal ulcer or perforation.

Skin Rash

Certain patients taking Etodolac ER may develop a skin rash as a side effect of treatment, DailyMed reports. Small, irritated patches of red skin may develop across a patient's body, which can appear dry or begin to itch. Skin rash side effects are temporary and subside once treatment with this medication ends.

Headache, Dizziness or Weakness

While taking this medication, patients may experience head pain, dizziness or unusual sensations of weakness, RxList warns. Headache pain and dizziness can be bothersome and may interfere with a patient's ability to concentrate or focus during daily work, school or home activities. Body weakness, also called asthenia, or malaise may lead to increased fatigue, which may cause patients to appear lethargic or depressed. If these side effects persist or become severe, affected patients should contact a physician as soon as possible.
