If your skin is covered in red, irritated razor bumps every time you shave, you may have folliculitis. Folliculitis occurs when a virus, bacteria or fungi enters the skin and causes an infection in the hair follicles, which causes red bumps to appear on the skin. One of the most common causes of folliculitis is shaving, according to MayoClinic.com in the article "Folliculitis." Consult a doctor if your skin is severely infected.

Electric Razor

If you are suffering from razor bumps, leaving the skin alone will help eliminate the bumps. If you absolutely must shave, using an electric razor may be less irritating to your skin. Razor blades may spread bacteria throughout the skin, which may make the razor bumps look even worse. Shaving as infrequently as possible and using an electric razor may help eliminate razor bumps, particularly if you use a moisturizing aftershave lotion, recommends MayoClinic.com.

Anti-bacterial Soap

Washing the afflicted area twice a day with anti-bacterial soap may help reduce the virus, bacteria or fungi that is infecting the skin. Wash your skin with a clean washcloth every time, or you risk reinfecting your skin and making the razor bumps worse. Additionally, drying your skin with a clean towel may help cut back on the spread of bacteria and help eliminate razor bumps more quickly. Consult a doctor before using anti-bacterial soap as a home remedy to treat razor bumps.

Hydrocortisone Cream

According to Valerie Monroe in the article "How Can I Avoid Underarm Razor Bumps?" in "O, the Oprah Magazine," placing a small amount of over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream on the afflicted skin may help reduce the swelling, redness and irritation of razor bumps. You can purchase hydrocortisone cream at drugstores and grocery stores. Consult a doctor before using hydrocortisone cream as a home remedy to treat razor bumps.
