Healthy Food List for Weight Loss

Don't be tempted by fad weight loss regimens. According to MayoClinic.com in the article "Weight Loss: Choosing a Diet That's Right for You," eating a variety of healthy foods and getting regular exercise will help you lose weight more consistently than a fad diet that consists of eating the same foods over and over again in an attempt to lose weight quickly.

Fruits and Veggies

Eating fruits and vegetables that are dense and nutritious, but low in calories and saturated fat, are ideal to stay full and satisfied while losing weight at the same time. MayoClinic.com recommends incorporating green beans, broccoli, asparagus and salad greens into your diet to help you lose weight. Eating fresh fruits instead of dried fruits or fruit juices may help eliminate unnecessary sugar from your diet. Stick with whole, fresh fruits and canned fruits in water instead of syrup.

Whole Grains

Whole grains are high in fiber, which will make your stomach feel fuller for longer than refined carbohydrates like white pasta, white bread and white rice. Replace all refined carbohydrates with whole grains, like whole-grain crackers, whole-grain pasta, whole-wheat bread and brown rice. Starting your day off with oatmeal or whole grain cereal may help you feel full throughout the morning without needing a midmorning snack.

Protein

Protein will help you stay energized and satisfied, but some protein sources contain large amounts of saturated fat. Red meat, for example, is high in saturated fat and calories, which may cause you to gain weight and increase your risk of heart disease. Instead, eat proteins that are low in saturated fat and high in omega-3 fatty acids, like salmon, according to "Fitness" magazine. For a satisfying protein-filled snack in between meals, munch on a handful of almonds, which help build muscle tissue.
