What Is Zyrtec?

Zyrtec is an antihistamine used to treat and prevent symptoms associated with seasonal allergies and hay fever. The medication is available in the same dosage, with or without a prescription. Zyrtec contains the active ingredient cetirizine to stop your itching, sneezing and runny nose.

Uses

Zyrtec treats indoor and outdoor allergies. Ragweed, pollen, dust and pet dander allergies respond to the medication.

Dosage

Zyrtec comes in several strengths, with dosages available for both adults and children. Dosage options include 5 and 10 mg, taken once daily.

The antihistamine's availability includes syrups, chewable tablets, tablets and eye drops. Children's Zyrtec flavors include bubble gum and grape.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Zyrtec include drowsiness, headache, insomnia, confusion and vision problems. Do not operate heavy machinery or drive a vehicle until knowing the full effects of the medication.

Warnings

Do not drink alcohol while taking Zyrtec. Stop taking Zyrtec and seek emergency medical attention for signs of an allergic reaction to the medication, including difficulty breathing, hives or swelling of the airway.
