Deramaxx is the brand name for the generic drug deracoxib, a type of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug or NSAID. This medication is approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration to alleviate pain and inflammation in dogs following orthopedic surgery. Dog owners should consult a veterinarian regarding the side effects of Deramaxx prior to administering this medication to their dog.

Upset Stomach

Upset stomach symptoms are the most common side effects exhibited by dogs receiving treatment with Deramaxx. During clinical trials, approximately 10 percent of dogs experienced vomiting following treatment with Deramaxx after orthopedic surgery, according to Novartis Animal Health, the pharmaceutical distributor of this medication. Additional stomach upset side effects may include nausea or diarrhea. Dogs that excrete unusually dark or bloody stools should be taken to a veterinarian immediately for further evaluation and care. This side effect of Deramaxx may be a sign of internal bleeding or stomach ulcer formation.

Surgical Site Drainage

Approximately 10 percent of dogs experienced surgical site drainage as a side effect of Deramaxx in clinical trials for this medication, Drugs.com reports. Dogs that develop this side effect may display unusual oozing or fluid leakage from the surgical incision site. Excessive drainage may make it more difficult for the incision site to heal, which can increase the risk of infection.

Increased Thirst or Urination Changes

While receiving treatment with Deramaxx, dogs may appear to be more thirsty than usual. Increased thirst may also contribute to increased urination. Dog owners may notice that their dog's urine appears unusually dark or emits an abnormal odor. These side effects of Deramaxx may be indicative of kidney damage and affected dogs should receive further care from a veterinarian.

Jaundice

Unusual yellowing of a dog's eyes, skin or gums may occur during treatment with this medication. These side effects, which are collectively referred to as jaundice, may be signs of liver damage. Dogs that develop these side effects require prompt care from a veterinarian.

Allergic Reaction

Infrequently, dogs treated with Deramaxx may experience a severe allergic reaction to this medication. Allergic reaction side effects may include excessive scratching, pale gums, vomiting, seizures, sudden diarrhea, cold limbs or loss of consciousness, Doctors Foster and Smith Pharmacy warns. Dogs who exhibit these hypersensitive reaction side effects should receive emergency medical care in order to prevent life-threatening complications.
