Side Effects of Cyproheptadine

Cyproheptadine is a prescription medication indicated to alleviate allergic reactions including eye irritation, nasal congestion and skin hives. This medication may also be administered to patients who receive epinephrine following the onset of a severe life-threatening allergic reaction called anaphylaxis. Cyproheptadine is an antihistamine and works by limiting the affect of histamine, an allergy-inducing substance, in the body. Patients should be aware of the side effects of cyproheptadine before receiving treatment with this medication.

Oral or Nasal Dryness

Treatment with cyproheptadine may cause oral or nasal dryness in patients, MedlinePlus warns. Affected patients may experience throat irritation, increased thirst, difficulty swallowing, thick or sticky saliva, nasal congestion or sneezing. These side effects may be bothersome, but subside once treatment with cyproheptadine ends.

Drowsiness or Excitement

Increased drowsiness or fatigue may occur in certain patients following treatment with this antihistamine. Excessive fatigue may make it difficult for patients to actively participate in their usual daily activities. Alternatively, certain patients -- especially children -- may become unusually excited or restless after receiving a dose of cyproheptadine, Drugs.com reports. Excitability can lead to sleeping difficulties in affected patients.

Weakness or Dizziness

Treatment with cyproheptadine may cause unusual sensations of weakness or dizziness in patients. These side effects may exacerbate symptoms of fatigue and can limit a patient's ability to perform normal daily tasks.

Upset Stomach

After taking a dose of this medication, patients may experience upset stomach side effects. These gastrointestinal complications may include nausea, vomiting, appetite changes, diarrhea or constipation, according to PDRhealth. Certain patients may also experience unusual weight gain during treatment.

Cough, Chest Discomfort or Wheezing

Increased chest congestion may develop as a side effect of cyproheptadine in patients. Chest congestion may lead to chest pain, cough or wheezing.

Vision Problems

Patients taking cyproheptadine may develop vision problems as a side effect of treatment. Blurred or cloudy vision may be signs of a severe reaction to this medication and affected patients should seek prompt care from a medical professional.

Increased Urination or Sweating

Cyproheptadine may cause increased urination or excessive sweating in certain patients. If these side effects occur, patients should consult a medical professional as soon as possible.
