Acetasol HC is a prescription medication utilized to treat bacterial ear infections. This medication contains two active ingredients: acetic acid, which works by preventing bacterial growth within the ear; and hydrocortisone, a type of steroid that reduces ear inflammation. Though Acetasol HC side effects are limited, patients should be aware of these potential effects of treatment before beginning to use this antibacterial medication.

Stinging or Burning

Patients receiving treatment with Acetasol HC may experience an unusual stinging sensation when this liquid medication is administered as drops within the affected ear, RxList warns. Stinging or burning sensations may be uncomfortable, but are temporary and subside within a few minutes of treatment.

Itching or Irritation

The treated ear may appear unusually red or irritated following treated with Acetasol HC. Certain patients may also develop sensations of itching within or along the treated ear, Drugs.com reports. Patients who frequently scratch at the affected ear may notice an increase in irritation or inflammation.

Allergic Reaction

Improper use of Acetasol HC in hypersensitive patients may induce allergic reaction symptoms. Symptoms associated with an allergic reaction to Acetasol HC include dizziness, difficulty breathing, skin rash or swelling or itching of the throat, face or mouth, Kaiser Permanente reports. Though anaphylaxis occurs infrequently, it may be life-threatening if immediate medical attention is not sought for the affected patient.
