How to Make Natural Lip Balm

Smooth, supple lips not only look great but do not come with the irritation and pain of dry, chapped lips. Instead of buying lip products that contain chemicals and ingredients you cannot even pronounce, make your own lip balm out of natural ingredients. You can customize the flavor and scent of the lip gloss to fit your preferences. You can even put some homemade natural lip gloss in a cute container and give it as a gift.

Step 1

Choose a base substance. Common choices are petroleum jelly and beeswax. If you choose petroleum jelly, put a couple tablespoons in a small bowl. If you choose beeswax, heat it in a double broiler until it is soft (around 100 degrees F) then scoop it into a small bowl or just mix the ingredients inside the pot.

Step 2

Pour in a drop of honey. Honey has a sweet fragrance and a light, sugary taste. It can also help heal chapped, broken skin on the lips.

Step 3

Mix in a few drops of essential oil. The oil will help moisturize your lips. Different properties of oils can have different effects on your lips. Try lavender or chamomile for a relaxing effect. Try menthol or peppermint for a more invigorating balm. You can also choose oils based on the scents you prefer.

Step 4

Stir all of the ingredients together. Seal the lip balm in a small jar. Do not open the jar for a week or two to allow the oils to infuse with the other ingredients.

Tips and Warnings

  • Try making several different balms, using different recipes, to find the one you like best. For a shimmering lip gloss, add a sprinkle of shimmer powder to the mixture.
