Contact lenses are a preferred method of vision correction for many people. Whether it is for comfort or aesthetics, contacts are often the way to go. Contact lenses come in both soft, and more firm versions, each of which has its benefits. Contacts that are more rigid are typically more durable but less comfortable than soft lenses. Soft contact lenses are at risk for tearing if handled improperly. If a torn contact lens finds its way into your eye, the removal procedure is basically the same as with an undamaged contact; however, use caution so you don't scratch the inside of your eye.

Step 1

Find an area in your house, or wherever you are, that is well lit and has a mirror. Wash your hands thoroughly, then dry them well. Inspect your hands to be certain there is no lint or other debris on your hands before you begin.

Step 2

Apply a few drops of a lubricating eye solution into your eye to moisten the lens and prevent it from sticking.

Step 3

Pull your lower eyelid down while looking up. Gently slide the contact down into the lower white part of your eye using your index finger.

Step 4

Pinch the contact lens between your index finger and thumb, then remove it from your eye. If you can see the tear when it is still in your eye, be careful not to scrape a pointed edge across your eye as you pinch it.

Step 5

Inspect the lens under a light once it is removed to see if it is still intact. If the tear has caused any pieces to break free, they may still be inside your eye. Lift your eyelids and look in all directions in front of a mirror to determine if the missing piece is still in your eye.

Step 6

Contact your doctor if you feel you haven't removed all of the contact lens, or if you have caused any scratches to your eyeball in the process.

Things You'll Need
