Information on ADHD in Adults
Overview
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a condition typically diagnosed in childhood and pervasive throughout life. ADHD can impair functioning, but is not usually severe enough to require hospitalization or extreme safety measures. ADHD can be successfully treated in both children and adults.
Significance
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, ADHD affects one child in every classroom of the United States, on average. As ADHD is usually diagnosed before the age of 7, it is estimated that there are roughly as many adults that have the condition.
Types
Typing the kind of ADHD in an individual is based on symptoms. There is predominantly inattentive ADHD, predominantly hyperactive-impulsive ADHD and the combined type of ADHD.
Identification
Identifying ADHD is done by a physician or mental health professional. There are behavior checklists and assessments for ADHD. A person may self-report symptoms of hyperactivity, poor impulse control or the inability to concentrate.
Treatment
Treating ADHD includes psychotherapy or medication to address symptoms. Counseling may be beneficial for adults to improve time-management skills, organizational strategies and impulse control. Medications, such as stimulants, help to control the physical symptoms.
Famous Ties
Jim Carey, Robin Williams, Magic Johnson and Walt Disney are all famous people who have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
